Interestingly, rather than brute-force attacks against known Form-based mail programs (including the infamous Formmail), they test and attack custom-written contact forms. These (so far) have included both PHP and Perl/CGI forms (though not Frontpage-based forms, as they work on a different system). The situation occurs when the information being received by the form (i.e. the input by the user) is not correctly checked. For example, you may include a From field for users to insert their e-mail address. If you do not check that either the e-mail address is in the correct format, that there is too much information (extending to many thousands of characters) or has the wrong type of information (e.g. new-line characters such as \r and \n or CR and LF respectively) then an attacker can 'inject' extra, unwanted information into the e-mail. Engineer's immediately began to diagnose the issue and moved all traffic off the Level3 circuit on to our Tiscali circuit. While the resolved the issue until CoreIX received information from Level3 for a fix, the Tiscali circuit in Telehouse suffered an issue were certain prefixes in the CoreIX IP range were not being advertised to the Internet due to unplanned maintenance Tiscali themselves were undergoing. Initial estimates show 20% of the prefixes were not routing to our network which caused another short outage around 15:15 lasting for approx. 10 minutes. At 15:25, all parts of the network were restored to normal and Network Engineers will continue to monitor the situation throughout the night. This was due, initially, to a cooling fan failure, which in turn blew a fan supply protection fuse within a UPS unit. This caused the unit to heat up, resulting in an 'over termperature' alarm. The on-call engineer switched off and isolated the UPS module leaving the remaining two to supply the load. During this period, one of the modules' input transformer failed as well, causing the supply fuse on one phase (output) to blow. As a fall-over measure, the system transferred power to a static bypass mode. On re-application of all three phases to the system, the input transformer completely failed, flashed over and blew up, once again blowing the supply fuse. ** UPS Restoration Contrary to our e-mail from Monday, the UPS backup was not restored on Tuesday morning as it was believed to be too risky without the third, spare, backup. Therefore they have postponed it to next week (either Wednesday or Thursday at 08:00) when all three units should be restored together. Engineer's immediately began to diagnose the issue and moved all traffic off the Level3 circuit on to our Tiscali circuit. While the resolved the issue until CoreIX received information from Level3 for a fix, the Tiscali circuit in Telehouse suffered an issue were certain prefixes in the CoreIX IP range were not being advertised to the Internet due to unplanned maintenance Tiscali themselves were undergoing. Initial estimates show 20% of the prefixes were not routing to our network which caused another short outage around 15:15 lasting for approx. 10 minutes. At 15:25, all parts of the network were restored to normal and Network Engineers will continue to monitor the situation throughout the night. This was due, initially, to a cooling fan failure, which in turn blew a fan supply protection fuse within a UPS unit. This caused the unit to heat up, resulting in an 'over termperature' alarm. The on-call engineer switched off and isolated the UPS module leaving the remaining two to supply the load. During this period, one of the modules' input transformer failed as well, causing the supply fuse on one phase (output) to blow. As a fall-over measure, the system transferred power to a static bypass mode. On re-application of all three phases to the system, the input transformer completely failed, flashed over and blew up, once again blowing the supply fuse. ** UPS Restoration Contrary to our e-mail from Monday, the UPS backup was not restored on Tuesday morning as it was believed to be too risky without the third, spare, backup. Therefore they have postponed it to next week (either Wednesday or Thursday at 08:00) when all three units should be restored together. IFL have assured us that the transfer back onto UPS supplies should be transparent and that the two units currently running have been fully tested by their manufacturer. ** IFL2 As this covers the IFL1 facility (and our servers are in IFL2), these issues do not directly affect us, however our traffic is routed through IFL1.
